Ingredients:
- 1 to 2 pieces of fresh turmeric root (depending on size), peeled and grated
- 1 to 2 inches of fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
- 3 to 4 cups of water
- Honey or palm sugar to taste (optional)
- A pinch of black pepper (optional, as it enhances the absorption of curcumin in turmeric)
- A squeeze of lime or lemon juice (optional)
Instructions:
- Peel and grate the fresh turmeric and ginger roots.
- In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
- Add the grated turmeric and ginger to the boiling water.
- Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool down slightly.
- Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove the turmeric and ginger solids.
- If desired, sweeten the jamu with honey or palm sugar to taste. You can also add a pinch of black pepper for enhanced absorption of curcumin and a squeeze of lime or lemon juice for acidity.
- Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
- Serve the jamu warm or chilled, according to your preference.
