JAMU KUNYIT ASEM

Jamu kunyit asam is another traditional Indonesian herbal drink, but instead of betel leaves, it primarily features turmeric (kunyit) and tamarind (asam). Here's a basic recipe for making jamu kunyit asam:

Ingredients:

  • 1 to 2 pieces of fresh turmeric root (depending on size), peeled and grated
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of tamarind paste or tamarind pulp
  • 3 to 4 cups of water
  • Honey or palm sugar to taste (optional)
  • A pinch of salt (optional)
  • A squeeze of lime or lemon juice (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and grate the fresh turmeric root.
  2. Dissolve the tamarind paste or pulp in water, squeezing and mixing it until the water becomes tangy. If using tamarind pulp, soak it in warm water for a few minutes, then strain to remove the seeds and fibers.
  3. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  4. Add the grated turmeric to the boiling water.
  5. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool down slightly.
  7. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove the turmeric solids.
  8. If desired, sweeten the jamu with honey or palm sugar to taste. You can also add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors and a squeeze of lime or lemon juice for acidity.
  9. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  10. Serve the jamu warm or chilled, according to your preference.

Jamu kunyit asam is known for its refreshing and tangy taste, with turmeric providing its signature earthy flavor and tamarind adding a sour note. It's often consumed as a health tonic or remedy, believed to have various health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting immunity, and reducing inflammation. Enjoy your homemade jamu kunyit asam!
